Cult Order reaches its seventh release with Upercent’s Baum EP. Two tracks with dirt in their grooves and room between the beats.
“Baum” opens with a voice that sounds like a prayer being recited, set against one of Upercent’s signature snares. A deep, romantic melancholy settles over a grimy bassline, all of it wrapped in the worn texture of a cassette found in a drawer. It’s a thread that runs back to “Agrair”. Same ache, years apart.
“That Time” goes the other way. No melody, no romance, just a stuttering pulse and a handful of elements. Every new entrance shifts the weight of the whole. Analog grain and a Roland SH-101 give the sequence its body, while a restless bassline slips through the gaps until it finally locks in. Where “Baum” gathers, this one subtracts, clearing away everything that isn’t essential.
Baum EP holds two veiled stories. What’s missing from each is still present in the other.
