Montreal duo Haffenfold bring together two distinct creative backgrounds: a coder and a photographer, exploring the balance between the harder and softer sides of techno, always keeping the dancefloor at the centre.
Their tracks often start with a character in mind: a specific person, an archetype, or even a creature. “The Master” follows this approach through the figure of the “original DJ”, someone operating from the shadows, quietly guiding the room without demanding attention. The groove mirrors that idea, unfolding with the same sense of quiet control, while original vocals written by the duo bring the figure to life. The words themselves play an important role, particularly for DJs who may recognize something familiar in them.
“Babywork” applies the same concept to something more personal. Its character is consumed by work, endlessly talking about it and pulling everyone around them into a world where work becomes the only thing they know. The idea draws directly from Karel’s years working freelance in the creative field, with the vocals once again playing a central role.
Both tracks stretch out in extended formats, giving the grooves room to breathe. It’s Haffenfold’s preferred format: long arrangements, distinctive vocals and enough space for each idea to develop.
